It’s hard to believe, but two years have passed since my life changed for the better. It was on December 15, 2004 that I had a gastric bypass procedure known as Roux en Y performed by Dr. Joseph Caruana at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo. It was a day that I looked forward to with both anticipation and trepidation.

People often ask me the toughest things about having a gastric bypass procedure. The answer is simple…at least it has been for me. The most difficult part was deciding to do it. I procrastinated for over a year before I made the call to Dr. C’s office in Williamsville, and a day hasn’t passed that I haven’t felt when I picked up the phone and dialed 716-565-3990, I saved my life.

I’m not saying how much I weighed. Some things can remain between Dr. C., myself and my immediate family. I will share the fact that, in two years, I’ve lost 210 pounds, hitting the 200 mark way back in May. And once the weather cleared up, I started a rigorous walking program. Starting June 1 through two weeks ago when the snow started to fly, I went from 2 to 5 miles a day at least four times a week. Now I also am on the weight machines and walk in the pool at the Olean YMCA.

The energy I have simply blows me away at times. What I’ve accomplished these past two years has convinced me of one thing. If I hadn’t made that phone call when I did, you probably would have read my obituary in the Times Herald by now. Friends say that I have added years to my life by having this operation and I would have to agree. Socially, I’ve seen barriers fall and made new friends. I’ve seen some remarkable improvements in my personal life. For starters, I’m getting married in May.

Clearly there are some things in life worth taking a chance on. Surround yourself with good medical personnel, a great support system, and on a personal level, start making smart decisions.

If you are interested in talking to me about a weight problem and the possibility of having gastric bypass, my advice is free. I can be reached at (716) 307-3445. Hope to hear from you.
