Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is a restrictive procedure
that has been widely performed in Europe. Since FDA approval
of the LapBand device in June 2001, its popularity in the
United States has grown. Synergy Bariatrics currently
does not offer this procedure.
The procedure involves placement
of a silicone band around the main portion of the stomach,
dividing it into two sections, one much smaller than the other.
This drastically restricts the amount of food which can be
eaten and creates a feeling of fullness much sooner than usual.
The band can be kept in place for up to 10 years and the degree
of restriction is adjusted periodically by the surgeon in
an office setting.

After gastric banding, patients
typically lose about 40-50% of their excess body weight gradually
over a period of 18 months to 3 years 1 2.
However, since adjustability of the band is an integral part
of its success, regular follow-up with the surgeon is mandatory
and continued for as long as the band is present.
The most frequent complications
of gastric banding tend to be less serious than other weight
loss surgery procedures. They usually involve slippage or
problems with the band and can be easily corrected with additional
surgery. But, there are some unique concerns to consider.
The function of the band may be counteracted by inadequate
feelings of satisfaction after smaller meals, and the consumption
of high-calorie beverages like soda and sugary drinks.
