Synergy Bariatrics dedicates its practice
exclusively to gastric bypass surgery. Having performed over
1800 surgical procedures to date, Dr. Joseph A. Caruana is
one of the most experienced and well-respected surgeons in
the country; having helped many patients with some of the
most life-threatening situations.
The surgical program of Synergy
Bariatrics takes a comprehensive approach to weight loss surgery.
The process begins with a general information seminar about
gastric bypass with emphasis on the risks, benefits, and lifestyle
changes associated with weight loss surgery. Those who wish
to proceed usually undergo a wellness assessment with a clinician
and are required to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges
that lie ahead.
Each patient meets
privately with Dr. Joseph Caruana for consultation. A physical
exam is conducted and all concerns are discussed, oftentimes,
with the patient’s family member or friend present. Surgery
will not be performed on any patient when the risks outweigh
the potential benefits.
With focus upon proper
nutrition, adequate exercise and behavior change, all patients
meet with our registered dietitian and exercise physiologist
at least once prior to surgery for a more in-depth look at
the dietary and lifestyle changing consequences of surgery.
Patients are encouraged to ask questions and perform their
own research. Several approved resources are distributed so
that patients have an adequate amount of material for future
reference.
Synergy Bariatrics stressed
the importance of long term follow-up with patients to monitor
weight loss progress and overall health. Continued support
and encouragement for a healthy lifestyle is always available
from the medical professionals and peers in partnership with
us.
In recognition of our
program’s dedication, experience, and excellent outcomes,
Synergy
Bariatrics, in partnership with Sisters of Charity Hospital,
has been named a Center of Excellence by the American Society
for Bariatric Surgery. A bariatric program earns this distinction
after thorough scrutiny by the Surgical
Review Corporation.
The center, hospital, and surgeon must prove that
1) they have the resources to perform safe bariatric surgery
2) they have excellent short and long-term outcomes. These
indices, therefore, not only
document process, i.e. equipment, supplies, training of surgeons,
and the availability of consultant services, but emphasize
results.[1]
