The decision to undergo weight loss surgery is a difficult
one, involving many important considerations for yourself
and your family. Health psychologists can assist in this process
by providing a Presurgical Psychological Evaluation (PPE)
Some important things
to keep in mind about the Presurgical Psychological Evaluation
(PPE) include the following:
|
-
PPE is a routine
procedure for many surgical candidates.
-
Participating
in the PPE does not obligate you to complete the surgical
procedure.
-
PPE is an opportunity to discuss any
concerns you may have about your surgery.
-
PPE assists your surgeon in developing
the most effective treatment plan for you.
-
PPE helps determine what type of preparation
may help you tolerate the procedure.
-
PPE can assist
in the development of the best post-operative plan for
you that will support lifestyle changes and other adjustments
necessary to derive the greatest benefit from the surgical
procedure.
Typically, the Presurgical
Psychological Evaluation involves an interview, review of
medical records and paper-and-pencil psychological surveys.
Depending on the circumstances, the health psychologist may
complete the entire evaluation in one visit or may wish to
conduct it over two or more sessions. Some insurance companies
have specific provisions for PPE’s. You may wish to contact
your insurance carrier prior to your evaluation
