Joseph a. Caruana, MD, FACS | Director of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Bariatric Surgeon
Founder of Synergy Bariatrics, Dr. Joseph Caruana performs laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic revisional bariatric surgery. After leaving full time academics for private practice in 1991, he specialized in surgery of the liver, biliary tract, stomach, and intestine. From there, because of increasing evidence that weight loss surgery is beneficial to patients facing serious obesity, he began to specialize in gastric bypass.
Dr. Joseph Caruana has performed over 5,000 bariatric surgeries, and his published outcomes of safety and successful weight loss are among the best in the world. He has published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Joseph Caruana is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Mark Cavaretta, MD, FACS | Bariatric Surgeon
Dr. Mark Cavaretta is a bariatric surgeon who performs laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy.
Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Mark Cavaretta is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
A native of Western New York, Dr. Mark Cavaretta completed his surgical residency at Monmouth Medical Center in New York City, as well as a fellowship in bariatric surgery at the Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pennsylvania.
Eyad Wohaibi, MD, FACS | Bariatric Surgeon
Dr. Eyad Wohaibi is an attending bariatric surgeon who performs laparoscopic and minimally invasive bariatric procedures.
His background and experience encompasses bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, and endoscopy, with his most recent prior appointments including attending surgeon and Clinical Scholar (Assistant Professor) at Central Michigan University in Saginaw MI. His clinical education experience also includes fellowship in minimally invasive surgery/ Bariatric surgery from Albany Medical Center.
Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, he is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and a diplomat of American Board of Obesity Medicine. Dr. Eyad Wohaibi is also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons.
Christina Sanders, DO, FACS, FACOS | Bariatric and General Surgeon
Dr. Christina Sanders is a board certified general and bariatric surgeon who performs laparoscopic gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. She also performs advanced laparoscopic and robotic procedures focusing on reflux, the GI tract and hernia repair. Dr. Sanders joined the UBMD surgery group in 2018 and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University at Buffalo. She is working with Synergy Bariatrics at ECMC.
Dr. Sanders received her medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. She completed an internship and residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
Dr. Sanders is a member of several professional societies and has presented at many national conferences. She also expects to complete her MBA, in Healthcare Management at Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School in 2019.
Nicole C. Rossney, MS, PA-C | Bariatric Program Manager, Bariatric Physician Assistant
As Bariatric Program Manager, Nicole Rossney oversees the operational functions within our practice, and also assists bariatric surgeons during procedures.
Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, Nicole is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as well as the New York State Chapter.
Nicole is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Heath Administration at D'Youville College, where she also teaches the surgery module to Physician Assistant students.,
Misty A. Hofert, MS, PA-C, CPT | Bariatric Physician Assistant, Certified Personal Trainer
Misty Hofert is responsible for assisting our bariatric surgeons during procedures, as well as providing follow-up care after surgery.
Certified by the National Commission on Certification by Physician Assistants and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Misty is also a certified personal trainer.
Prior to joining the Synergy Bariatrics team, she completed MS and BS degrees in physician assistant studies from DʼYouville College.
Christina Scovazzo, MS, PA-C | Bariatric Physician Assistant
Christina Scovazzo is a physician assistant, responsible for assisting during bariatric surgeries as well as providing patients with important follow-up care after their procedures.
Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, she is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
She earned her MS and BS degrees in physician assistant studies from DʼYouville College.
Scott V. Monte, PharmD | Clinical Pharmacist
Dr. Scott Monte serves as a clinical pharmacist, assisting bariatric surgery patients by reviewing their medications prior to surgery and outlining changes and new health requirements to come.
Prior to joining Synergy Bariatrics in 2009, Dr. Scott Monte completed a post- doctoral residency and fellowship with the University at Buffalo and the Clinical Pharmacokinetic Laboratory Associates.
He earned his Doctorate in Pharmacy at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Ann Marie LiCausi, LMSW | Eating Behavior Specialist
Ann Marie LiCausi is an eating behavior specialist, who provides education and counseling for potential and current bariatric surgery patients.
In addition, she is nutrition certified and a reiki practioner.
Jennifer Turesky, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE | Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator
Jennifer Turesky is a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified dietitian/nutritionist, and certified diabetes educator. As Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for Synergy Bariatrics, she supports bariatric patients with their nutrition and weight loss goals, both pre- and post-surgery. She also facilitates bariatric support groups.
With over 10 years of professional experience, Jennifer is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the New York State Dietetic Association, the Western New York Dietetic Association, The American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the Western New York Association of Diabetes Educators.
She holds a BS and MS in Dietetics from DʼYouville College.
